In the dimly lit corners of our Nation, a silent war wages on, affecting the very essence of our future – the youth. Behind the vibrant facade of our youths' potential lies an alarming crisis: drug abuse. It's a topic we often shy away from. However, the time has come to face the stark reality of what countless young lives are going through.
Whenever I come across the phrase 'drug abuse', it reminds me of Sarah. She was my departmental mate and neighbor during my university days at Akure, Ondo state in the southwestern part of Nigeria. Sarah was a bright-eyed teenager with a promising future.
She was complete and amazing in every ramification. An exceptionally intelligent and beautiful lady. She was classy, soft-spoken, and very sociable. She was the perfect example for other ladies to emulate. Aside these cherishable traits, she was also a talented chef who treated us (her lucky neighbors) to many free sumptuous meals at the slightest provocation.
In our third year, we proceeded for 6 months of industrial training (IT) where her life took the wrong turn. Rumor had it that she got involved with some ladies who introduced her to hard drugs. She gave it a try, soon became addicted and the rest was history.
On her return, the once bright and beautiful looking Sarah had become an old, ugly, and haggard-looking drug addict. Her new appearance was the only sermon I needed to stay away from drugs. She was later rusticated from school for sale and use of hard drugs on campus.
Sarah's story reveals the devastating impact drugs can have on the aspirations and dreams of our youth. Her journey started innocently, a quest for acceptance and escape from the pressures of modern life. However, the enticing allure of substances soon lured her into a bondage of addiction, shrouding her aspirations in a thick fog of hopelessness.
Sarah's story is not unique; it echoes through countless households, classrooms, and neighborhoods, leaving families torn and dreams shattered. The human cost is immeasurable, and the impact echoes through generations. I see the huge happiness it brings when youths like Victor Osimhen and Hilda Baci make the nation proud. Imagine the thousands of other talents that could bring us more happiness being destroyed by this menace.
The youth battling drug abuse are not statistics; they are our sons, daughters, friends, and neighbors. As we confront the untold stories of this crisis, we are compelled to act with empathy and compassion, for within these struggles lies the potential for redemption and renewal.
Together, we can bridge the gaps in understanding and support. Let empathy guide our actions, replacing judgment with a commitment to nurture the potential that resides within every young soul. By unmasking the human cost of drug abuse, we pave the way for a future where shattered dreams can be rebuilt.
